Wild Salmon Monitoring PDF Print E-mail

Partner: MAC

Location: Newport, Co.Mayo, Ireland; replicable in other sites

Service and user scenario:
MAC will work with the Irish Marine Institute at its Aquaculture and Catchment Management Facility in Newport, Ireland, focusing on the monitoring and analysis of wild salmon stock dynamics. Having researched the various stakeholders’ requirements, MAC will pilot the use of the HABITATS INSPIRE data structures and advanced Web 3.0 interfacing/mashups to improve presentation, accessibility and use of the data that is being collected by the Marine Institute, to provide better intelligence to researchers, fishermen and decision makers on salmon conservation, so that they can better manage the wild-salmon resource in a sustainable manner and help prevent the extinction of wild salmon in rivers on the North Atlantic coast of Europe. This pilot will involve collaboration with the FP7 SALSEA-Merge project which is investigating the migration and distribution of salmon in the North-East Atlantic, working with the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (NASCO).

Use of environmental data:
Wild salmon data that is being collected by the Marine Institute will be made accessible to provide better intelligence to researchers, fishermen and decision makers on salmon conservation, so that they can better manage the wild-salmon resource in a sustainable manner and help prevent the extinction of wild salmon in rivers on the North Atlantic coast of Europe.

Stakeholders involved:
Irish Marine Institute collects and owns the data, but collaborates with other Marine Institutes and the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation. The service to be piloted will package and provide that data as better intelligence to researchers, fishermen and decision makers on salmon conservation.

Users involved:
The Pilot Service will enable Citizens (fishermen and researchers) to be involved, for future exploitation.

Policy / business model:
The data collection is part of the Irish National Policy and EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). It is mainly documented rather provided online. The HABITATS pilot will explore making it available as an online service.
